“Cuando se escriba su biografía –sugería Javier Echevarría, Prelado del Opus Dei-, entre otros aspectos relevantes de su personalidad sobrenatural y humana, este habrá de ocupar un lugar destacado: el primer sucesor de san Josemaría (…) en el gobierno del Opus Dei fue –ante todo y sobre todo– un cristiano leal”. Con esta pauta, el autor ha llevado a cabo un hondo trabajo de investigación, construyendo el texto sobre cartas, documentos y testimonios hasta ahora inéditos, y logrando una biografía conmovedora y rigurosa.
Álvaro del Portillo (1914-1994) fue el gran apoyo del Fundador, y permaneció a su lado desde muy joven hasta su fallecimiento. Desempeñó un papel relevante en el Concilio Vaticano II, y fue ordenado obispo en 1991. El 27 de septiembre de 2014 fue proclamado Beato.
