A los cinco años, Peekay es arrancado de su hogar para comenzar una nueva vida en un internado de Transvaal del Norte. Hace amistad con Hoppie, el exuberante revisor del tren y campeón de boxeo de los ferrocarriles, cuyas palabras de lucha y sabiduría suscitan en Peekay la ambición fervorosa, que le durará toda la vida, de llegar a ser campeón mundial de peso welter.
La guerra europea se hace sentir en el pueblecito de Peekay, donde éste encuentra un amigo en el excéntrico profesor alemán de música y experto en cactus, Doc. Las autoridades encarcelan a Doc como enemigo extranjero y Peekay halla el modo de infiltrarse en el mundo de la prisión para no separarse de su amigo. En el ambiente deshumanizado de la prisión Peekay encuentra su mejor entrenador de boxeo en la persona de un astuto negro llamado Geel Piet, hombre de todo quehacer. Así nace la leyenda del «Ángel Renacuajo» la leyenda de un pequeño boxeador invencible que encarnará la causa del pueblo africano contra el desalmado poder de los boers.
Situada en los años ’40 en Sudáfrica, esta auténtica epopeya de la supervivencia es la historia apasionante de un niño que libra y gana, por sus propios medios, una larga batalla contra la crueldad y la soledad.
