Tertius Lydgate, por su parte, joven médico emprendedor, anhela convertir la provinciana ciudad de Middlemarch a la «cultura científica», desafiando prejuicios e implantando reformas: a la bella Rosamond Vincy el talento del joven le suena a «una condecoración en la solapa o un ilustrísimo delante del nombre» y está convencida de que casándose con él accederá a una gloriosa vida social. También su matrimonio es un fracaso.
Y, en tercer término, Fred Vincy, el muchacho superfluo y sin vocación, y Mary Garth, la muchacha hacendosa y prudente, se gustan, se separan, se ponen a prueba y se vuelven a encontrar antes de consagrar ese vínculo al que sólo la experiencia y la resistencia parecen garantizar la fortuna y la felicidad.

She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight.

The novel details the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver, a brother and sister growing up on the river Floss near the village of St. Oggs, evidently in the 1820s, after the Napoleonic Wars but prior to the first Reform Bill (1832). (More) The novel spans a period of 10-15 years, from Tom and Maggie’s childhood up until their deaths in a flood on the Floss. The book is fictional autobiography in part, reflecting the disgrace that George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) herself had while in a lengthy relationship with a married man, George Henry Lewes.

The book examines the role of education in the lives of the characters and how such education and study has affected the characters. Rosamond Vincy’s finishing school education is a foil to Dorothea Brooke’s religiously-motivated (More) quest for knowledge. Rosamond initially admires Lydgate for his exotic education, and his intellect. A similar dynamic is present in Dorothea and Casaubon’s relationship, with Dorothea revering her new husband’s intellect and eloquence. In both cases, however, the young wives’ expectations of their husbands intellects are not reflected in reality.
