El viejo y el mar (The Old Man and the Sea) es una novela escrita por Ernest Hemingway en 1951 en Cuba y publicada en 1952. Fue su último trabajo de ficción importante publicado en vida y posiblemente su obra más famosa.
Un viejo lobo de mar está pasando una racha de mala suerte: hace 84 días que no logra capturar un solo pez. Todos los habitantes del pueblo se burlan de él, excepto un niño, que le mira y ayuda. Ambos deciden que el día siguiente será bueno para la pesca del pez espada. Todavía es de noche cuando se levanta, prepara los aparejos y se lanza a la mar con su pequeña barca. En alta mar, el viejo pone diversas carnadas. De pronto, la línea comienza a moverse. El viejo no puede controlarla. Se trata de un gigantesco pez espada. Cuatro horas más tarde, el pez se sacude en la superficie del agua y arrastra a la barca. El viejo lo sostiene con el sedal enrollado alrededor del cuerpo. No hay tierra a la vista. Ahora, mar adentro, el viejo sostiene en su línea al pez más grande que jamás había visto.
