El lector se encuentra con un relato en el que el protagonista, Pedrito de Andía, vive y sufre un verdadero camino iniciático que va desde la inocencia infantil, hasta conseguir el conocimiento de sí mismo y de la complejidad de su mundo. Ese camino se divide en dos partes que corresponden a periodos temporales: la primera transcurre durante los meses de junio y julio del año 1923, y la segunda, los meses de agosto, septiembre y octubre del mismo año.
