Escritos en pleno auge del movimiento romántico que caracterizó al siglo XIX, los Cuentos de Shakespeare son un clásico de la literatura anglosajona. Estas adaptaciones pretendían iniciar al lector en el universo shakespeariano realzando toda la modernidad del autor.
Los hermanos Charles y Mary Lamb seleccionaron, entre comedias y tragedias, un total de veinte obras y las vertieron en prosa. Su intención era acercar a los jóvenes al complejo universo de pasiones humanas del genial dramaturgo y facilitar la lectura de las tramas desvelando el misterio de la gran literatura.
A la versión en español de esta obra, realizada por el afamado traductor Adan Kovacsics, añadimos un estudio preliminar que firma la escritora y catedrática de la Universidad de Essex, Marina Warner. Entre sus líneas de investigación destaca el estudio de la fábula como género literario.
