Morning Star is a 2016 science fiction novel by American author Pierce Brown, the third in his Red Rising trilogy. Morning Star picks up as lowborn Darrow escapes capture and resumes his campaign against the tyrannical Sovereign (More) of the Society. Betrayed by his old friend Roque au Fabii, Darrow has witnessed the murders of his friends and suffered a year of torture and imprisonment. Now a shadow of his former self, he rejoins the rebellion he ignited, which has faltered since his presumed death. Darrow’s secret origin as a Red is now widely known, which has emboldened the lowColors but also galvanized the Golds against him. Pragmatic as ever, he begins to amass the resources and allies he needs to defeat the forces of the Sovereign.
Darrow is a shadow of his former self after a year of torture and imprisonment at the hands of Adrius au Augustus, the ArchGovernor of Mars, better known as the Jackal. Across the worlds, he is believed dead, thanks to a public execution faked by the Jackal and Octavia au Lune, the Sovereign. Sevro au Barca, now leader of the Sons of Ares, sends his deputy Holiday ti Nakamura to rescue Darrow, who discovers that Victra au Julii is also still alive and frees her as well. Reconciling and recovering at a hidden rebel stronghold, Darrow and Victra join Sevro’s gang of Howlers. Their first mission is to kidnap Quicksilver, the richest man in the Society, who they believe is the Jackal’s silent partner. Darrow and his men stumble into a peace negotiation between some of the Sovereign’s underlings — Cassius au Bellona, Moira au Grimmus and the Death Knight — on one side, and Darrow’s old friends — Virginia “Mustang” au Augustus, Kavax au Telemanus and Daxo au Telemanus — on the other. The room erupts in conflict and destruction; Moira and the Death Knight are killed. Mustang is shocked to find Darrow alive, and the Howlers manage to escape with Quicksilver and Kavax as prisoners. Quicksilver reveals that he had secretly co-founded the Sons of Ares with Sevro’s late father Fitchner au Barca, and offers his considerable resources to Darrow. Kavax also makes peace with Darrow and offers him allegiance.

The sequel to 2014’s Red Rising, Golden Son continues to follow lowborn Darrow’s plan to destroy the Society from (More) within.
Darrow, now one of the Peerless Scarred and in the service of his enemy, Nero au Augustus, is poised to gain control of his own fleet of warships, which he knows will be useful to the Sons of Ares and their plan to undermine the Society. During his final exam at the Academy, Darrow faces off against Cassius’s older brother, Karnus au Bellona, in an epic space battle. Darrow pulls a tactical move but underestimates Karnus and loses, resulting in several casualties. Karnus becomes praetor of his own fleet and all of Darrow’s plans have unraveled. Defeated, Darrow returns to his quarters at the Academy and set upon by Karnus and members of House Bellona, bent on revenge for Julian’s death. After Darrow suffers from this humiliation and the loss to Karnus, Augustus releases Darrow from his contract and advises he will be auctioned to another House at the Summit, a gathering of the Great Houses on Luna. Without the protection of Augustus, Darrow is vulnerable to Bellona family whose matriarch has tasked them to murder Darrow and bring back his heart.

Red Rising is a 2014 science fiction novel by American author Pierce Brown and the first of the eponymous trilogy. The novel, set on a future planet Mars, follows low born miner Darrow as he infiltrates the ranks of the elite (More) Golds.
It has been seven hundred years since mankind colonized other planets. The powerful ruling class of humans has installed a rigid and color-based social hierarchy, where the physically superior Golds at the top rule with an iron fist. Sixteen-year-old Darrow is a Red, a class of workers who toil beneath the surface of Mars mining helium-3 to terraform the planet and make it habitable. His wife Eo sings a forbidden folk tune in public as a protest against their virtual enslavement, and is arrested and hanged by Mars’ ArchGovernor, Nero au Augustus. Darrow cuts down and buries his wife’s body, a crime for which he is also hanged. However, Darrow awakes to find that he has been drugged and delivered into the hands of the Sons of Ares, a terrorist group of Reds who fight against the oppression of the “lowColors”. They have adopted the video of Eo’s song and execution as a rallying vehicle for their cause. Darrow joins the Sons when he learns that Mars was already terraformed centuries before and that the Reds have been tricked into perpetual servitude and subjugation.
