Lewis Wallace compuso Ben-Hur en 1880, una novela de fondo histórico y la más notable y popular de sus obras, a la que el cine ha dado una popularidad mundial. Ben-Hur, subtitulada Una historia de Cristo, es la descripción romántica del imperio romano tardío y del surgimiento del cristianismo; fue traducida a numerosos idiomas y se convirtió en un clásico.
