Kotor (hoy República de Montenegro), 1941.
Europa se desangra por el conflicto bélico.
Las tropas de Mussolini ocupan la zona y arrestan a Luka Brajnovic, un joven y valioso periodista croata. Con ese episodio se inicia un largo y doloroso itinerario hacia la libertad.
Luka logra casarse con Ana, pero muy pronto, con ella ya embarazada, la guerra les obliga a separarse. Los años transcurren sin que puedan reencontrarse, pero la dictadura de Tito y el exilio no podrán impedir que sea el amor quien venza.
Olga Brajnovic, con la ayuda de la correspondencia entre sus padres, reconstruye un relato conmovedor, que pone de manifiesto la hermosa grandeza del ser humano.
