Tras un breve panorama de la historia y cultura rusas, se presenta la vida, la obra y algunos textos significativos de seis de los grandes escritores rusos del siglo XIX: Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoievsky, Tolstoi y Chejov.
La literatura de todos ellos tiene características comunes, propias: transcurre en el vasto imperio del zar, es crítica, descriptiva, y difícil de igualar en el análisis psicológico de los personajes. Sobre todo, busca apasionadamente a Rusia: su personalidad, su historia, su esencia espiritual y su destino. Estos seis autores son ya patrimonio de todos los hombres y de todos los tiempos, al seguir descubriéndonos en sus páginas la hondura del ser humano, su miseria y su grandeza.
