Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851), the sixth book by American writer Herman Melville, is a sea story of Captain Ahab’s voyage in vengeful pursuit of a white whale, Moby Dick. Published in London in October and in New York the following month, the book was a commercial failure, out of print at the time of the author’s death in 1891, but its reputation rose during the twentieth century. D.H. Lawrence called it “the greatest book of the sea ever written.” Today it is considered one of the Great American Novels and a leading work of American Romanticism and the opening words, “Call me Ishmael,” form one of the most recognizable opening lines in Western literature.
