Chesterton, Gilbert Keith - St. Thomas Aquinas -
Language: English, Spiritual - Format: ePub
Born in thirteenth century Italy, Aquinas wrote some of the most influential books of the medieval period.
He revolutionized the way members of the Church thought as he reincorporated the ideas and philosophy of Aristotle back (More) into medieval Christianity.
The impact of Aquinas’ ideas has led him to be venerated not only by Catholics and Protestants, but also by non-religious thinkers who continue to revere his greatest work the Summa Theologica as “one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature.”
St. Thomas Aquinas by G. K. Chesterton is an accessible overview of the life and work of this remarkable medieval man.
In the introduction of this book Chesterton makes the statement that this book was not meant to be “anything but a popular sketch of a great historical character who ought to be more popular”, but its impact has been far greater. Etienne Gilson, a prominent 20th century expert on Aquinas, stated “I consider it as being without possible comparison the best book ever written on St. Thomas. Nothing short of genius can account for such an achievement.... Chesterton was one of the deepest thinkers who ever existed; he was deep because he was right; and he could not help being right; but he could not either help being modest and charitable, so he left it to those who could understand him to know that he was right, and deep."
G. K. Chesterton was an English writer, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and literary and art critic. His book St. Thomas Aquinas was first published in 1933 and he passed away in 1936. |

Chesterton, Gilbert Keith - El padre Brown. Relatos completos -
Language: Spanish, Novel - Format: ePub

Chesterton, Gilbert Keith - The Wisdom of Father Brown -
Language: English, Novel - Format: ePub
This is the second of five books of short stories about G. K. Chesterton’s fictional detective, first published in 1914. Father Brown is a short, nondescript Catholic Priest with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella who has an (More) uncanny insight into human evil. His methods, unlike those of his near contemporary Sherlock Holmes, although based on observation of details often unnoticed by others, tended to be intuitive rather than deductive. Although clearly devout, he always emphasizes rationality: despite his religiousness and his belief in God and miracles, he manages to see the perfectly ordinary, natural explanation of the problem. He is a devout, educated and "civilized" clergyman, who is totally familiar with contemporary and secular thought and behavior. His character was thought to be based on Father John O'Connor (1870 - 1952), a parish priest in Bradford, Yorkshire. |

Chesterton, Gilbert Keith - The Innocence of Father Brown -
Language: English, Novel - Format: ePub
The Innocence of Father Brown (1911) is the first of five collections of mystery stories by G. K. Chesterton starring an unimposing but surprisingly capable Roman Catholic priest. Father Brown's ability to uncover the truth behind (More) the mystery continually surpasses that of the "experts" around him, who are fooled into underestimation by the priest's unimpressive outward appearance and, often, by their own prejudices about Christianity. Combining captivating stories and insightful commentary, The Innocence of Father Brown is a delightful read. |

Chesterton, Gilbert Keith - St. Francis of Assisi -
Language: English, History & Biography - Format: ePub
Chesterton was an orthodox religious person, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism. In 1923, he wrote this short biography of St. Francis of Assisi, after whom Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio chose his papal name, Pope (More) Francis, when he was elected as the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, on 13 March 2013. The biography of St. Francis may help one understand why the Pope chose St. Francis as his namesake. Chesterton begins:
"A sketch of St. Francis of Assisi in modern English may be written in one of three ways. Between these the writer must make his selection; ... First, he may deal with this great and most amazing man as a figure in secular history and a model of social virtues. ... Second, he may go to the opposite extreme, and decide, as it were, to be defiantly devotional. ... Third, he may try to do what I have tried to do here; ... I am here addressing the ordinary common man, sympathetic but sceptical, and I can only rather hazily hope that, by approaching the great saint's story through what is evidently picturesque and popular about it, I may at least leave the reader understanding a little more than he did before of the consistency of a complete character; ...." |

Chesterton, Gilbert Keith - Ortodoxia -
