Tris is tested with equal aptitude for Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless, three different factions. This classifies her as "Divergent" and she is warned never to share this information with anyone for fear of her life. Those who are Divergent are hunted and killed by the ruthless leader of Erudite, and those who fail the initiation of their particular faction are deemed factionless.
