Creador junto con Aleksandr Pushkin de la gran prosa rusa del siglo XIX que habría de prolongarse en Dostoievski, Tolstói y Chéjov, Nikolái Gógol plasmó en «Almas muertas» la misma visión ácida y satírica de Rusia que impregna sus (More) «Historias de San Petersburgo», entre las que se cuentan relatos tan célebres como «La nariz» y «El abrigo». La publicación en 1842 de la presente novela, que alcanzó notable repercusión y levantó algún revuelo, le valió gran fama y consolidó su reputación de gran narrador. Su protagonista, Chichikov, pergeña el plan de comprar «almas muertas» —esto es, la propiedad de siervos fallecidos— para así poder pedir un crédito al Estado, con esta propiedad como aval, antes del siguiente censo. El relato de sus andanzas por la Rusia rural, así como de su resultado, es una de las cimas de la literatura de este país, en la que se puede apreciar el talento de Gógol no sólo para la sátira, sino también para la descripción de inolvidables caracteres.

Son bastantes los autores y las obras que, en una u otra forma, han novelado la vida de Jesús de Nazaret o de los personajes y vida de las primeras comunidades cristianas. El problema de muchas de esas novelas es que, aun con una (More) buena calidad literaria, parten de los evangelios como si éstos fueran textos biográficos de género histórico, lo que, como se estudia ya en la secundaria, no es correcto. Ese olvido lleva, no pocas veces, a descripciones y giros argumentales que se caen de las manos de quien tenga una mínima formación bíblica.
En cambio, cuando se lee a Jan Dobraczynski se tiene la suerte de estar ante la obra de alguien que tuvo una sólida preparación en temas bíblicos y de cultura judaica, lo que hace que, más allá de que guste o no el escrito, éste tenga una calidad científica asegurada (acorde y limitada, por supuesto, a las investigaciones de su época).
Así se cumple en estas «Cartas de Nicodemo», que novelan los encuentros del Nazareno con Nicodemo, el personaje que los evangelios describen como discípulo en secreto porque era un conocido fariseo. La forma epistolar de este relato novelado se la inspiraron al autor unas cartas apócrifas de Nicodemo que se divulgaron en la Edad Media. El autor, como decimos, demuestra un profundo conocimiento de las fuentes bíblicas y apócrifas, así como de las costumbres y ambiente de Israel en la época.
