Villette (Villette), pubblicato in Italia anche con i titoli Collegio femminile, L’angelo della tempesta, Miss Lucy[1] è un romanzo di Charlotte Brontë del 1853.Dopo un disastro familiare non specificato, la protagonista inglese (More) Lucy Snowe viaggia verso la città fittizia di Villette, sul modello di Bruxelles, per insegnare in una scuola femminile belga. Lì incontra la direttrice Madame Beck e il professore di letteratura, Monsieur Paul Emanuel, dal carattere deciso e irascibile. Il romanzo è rinomato non tanto per la sua trama quanto per la trattazione acuta della psicologia di Lucy, grazie particolarmente all’uso del doppio per rappresentare esternamente quanto il personaggio sta soffrendo internamente. La stessa autrice aveva insegnato in una scuola belga e il libro ha molte attinenze con il suo primo romanzo “The Professor”.

The novel is set (More) somewhere in the north of England, and goes through five distinct stages: Jane’s childhood at Gateshead Hall, where she is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations and oppression; her time as the governess of Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family, during which her earnest but cold clergyman cousin, St John Rivers, proposes to her; and the finale with her reunion with, and marriage to, her beloved Rochester.
