A Study in Scarlet, a short novel published in 1887, was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s first Sherlock Holmes story. At the beginning of the book, Dr. Watson meets the detective for the first time and we ride along with them to the (More) scene of a murder. The crime baffles the Scotland Yard detectives, but of course Holmes solves it easily. In the second half of the story, the scene shifts to Utah as we learn the murderer’s history. The action returns to London in the last two chapters. In his first adventure, Holmes demonstrates many of the traits for which he later became well known: meticulous study of a crime scene, brilliant deductive reasoning, aptitude for chemistry and music, and the somewhat annoying habit of withholding crucial facts from Watson (and consequently the reader) until the conclusion of the case.

Doyle’s final novel featuring the beloved sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, brings the detective and his friend to a country manor where they are preceded by either a murder or a suicide. A secretive organization lies culprit and an (More) infiltration of it is in order.

The last twelve stories written about Holmes and Watson, these tales reflect the disillusioned world of the 1920s in which they were written. La vida del Buscón (o Historia de la vida del Buscón, llamado don Pablos; ejemplo de vagamundos y espejo de tacaños) es una novela picaresca en castellano, escrita por Francisco de Quevedo.
El libro se publicó por primera vez en (More) 1626, aunque circuló antes en copias manuscritas algunas de las cuales se conservan hoy en día. Quevedo nunca reconoció haber escrito El Buscón, probablemente para esquivar problemas con la Inquisición, y su silencio sobre esta obra, pese a estar la autoría fuera de toda duda, ha incrementado los problemas en la datación de su composición.
Es una novela, la única escrita por su autor. Sigue la línea de la picaresca amarga iniciada por el Lazarillo de Tormes de autor desconocido. Así, cuestionando el determinismo al que apela el protagonista de Lazarillo de Tormes, el de Quevedo es manifiestamente hijo de sus propias acciones y voluntad.

Los Sueños, compuestos entre 1606 y 1623, circularon abundantemente manuscritos pero no se imprimieron hasta 1627. Se trata de cinco narraciones cortas de inspiración lucianesca donde se pasa revista a diversas costumbres, oficios (More) y personajes populares de su época. Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the “sons”) and the 1830s liberals sought (More) Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia’s path lay in its traditional spirituality.
Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first wholly modern novel in Russian Literature (Gogol’s Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose as in the style of Dante’s Divine Comedy). This prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight would exert an influence on most of the great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
The novel is also the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of well established novelists Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James, proving that Russian literature owes much to Ivan Turgenev.

Il capolavoro degli anni fra il 1750 ed il 1753, e forse la sua opera più famosa, è La locandiera. Mirandolina, locandiera fiorentina, esuberante, complessa, affascinante, sempre lucida e capace di autocontrollo, domina la (More) commedia superando ogni ostacolo per fare a proprio modo, badare ai propri affari di locandiera, assicurandosi tranquillità, agi, e mirando ad un costante equilibrio tra reputazione, interesse e libertà, senza andare in sposa ai tanti uomini rimasti da lei affascinati. Gli altri personaggi, più semplici, ma ben individuati, fanno risaltare la figura della protagonista. La locandiera chiude una fase dell’arte goldoniana.

The Metamorphosis (in German, Die Verwandlung, “The Transformation”) is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915, and arguably the most famous of his works along with the longer works The Trial and The Castle. The story (More) begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed into a giant “monstrous vermin”.

More than eight years before the novel opens, Anne Elliot, then a lovely, thoughtful, warm-hearted 19 year old, accepted a proposal of marriage from the handsome young naval officer Frederick Wentworth. Sir Walter, Anne’s fatuous, snobbish father and her equally self-involved older sister Elizabeth were dissatisfied with her choice, maintaining that he was no match for an Elliot of Kellynch Hall, the family estate. Her older friend and mentor, Lady Russell, acting in place of Anne’s late mother, persuaded her to break the engagement. Now 27 and still unmarried, Anne re-encounters her former love when his sister and brother-in-law, the Crofts, take out a lease on Kellynch. Wentworth is now a captain and wealthy from maritime victories in the Napoleonic wars. However, he has not forgiven Anne for rejecting him. While publicly declaring that he is ready to marry any suitable young woman who catches his fancy, he privately resolves that he is ready to become attached to any appealing young woman except for Anne Elliot.
