Il sedicenne Karl Rossmann viene mandato dai genitori in America, come punizione per aver sedotto una cameriera nella natia Praga. Accolto in casa di un ricco zio, ne è poi bruscamente scacciato senza una vera colpa. Sempre senza (More) colpa, verrà licenziato dall’albergo in cui aveva trovato lavoro come lift, finendo per essere assunto nel «Grande teatro» di Oklahoma. A questo punto il romanzo si interrompe.
Incompiuto come Il Castello, America è da alcuni considerato il più “vivace” romanzo kafkiano. Ma a ben vedere, la storia trasmette al lettore la stessa carica di angoscia degli altri due romanzi e il candido e cavalleresco Rossmann, così ingiustamente perseguitato, ricorda il tono assurdo e surreale di alcuni personaggi di Chaplin e di Buster Keaton.

Pride and Prejudice è certamente l’opera più popolare e più famosa di Jane Austen, vero e proprio long-seller, ineccepibile per l’equilibrio della struttura narrativa e lo stile terso e smagliante, ed emblematica della (More) «cristallina precisione» austeniana. Attraverso la storia delle cinque sorelle Bennet e dei loro corteggiatori, lo sguardo acuto della scrittrice, sorretto da un’ironia spietata e sottile, annota e analizza con suprema grazia fatti, incidenti, parole di un microcosmo popolato da struggenti personaggi femminili, sospesi tra l’ipocrisia dell’Inghilterra vittoriana e la voglia di un amore romantico e senza compromessi.
«È cosa ormai risaputa che a uno scapolo in possesso di un vistoso patrimonio manchi soltanto una moglie. Questa verità è così radicata nella mente della maggior parte delle famiglie che, quando un giovane scapolo viene a far parte del vicinato – prima ancora di avere il più lontano sentore di quelli che possono essere i suoi sentimenti in proposito – è subito considerato come legittima proprietà di una o dell’altra delle loro figlie.»
Jane Austen nacque a Steventon (Hampshire) nel 1775. Condusse una vita tranquilla, tra gli affetti familiari, a Bath e poi a Chawton, sempre nell’Hampshire. Si spense nel 1817 a Winchester.

Poe, Edgar Allan – Le avventure di Gordon Pym –

La trama del romanzo, che viene presentata come una serie di fatti realmente accaduti, ruota attorno alla vicenda di Arthur Gordon Pym, un giovane che si imbarca clandestinamente a bordo della baleniera “Grampus” e che si ritrova (More) a vivere una serie di disavventure in mare. Scampato a un naufragio, viene salvato dall’equipaggio della nave “Jane Guy”, insieme alla quale farà rotta verso il Polo Sud alla ricerca di terre inesplorate.
Secondo alcune teorie, l’ispirazione potrebbe essere venuta a Poe da fatti di cronaca. Le pagine dei giornali di Norfolk in data 18 e 19 febbraio 1836, riportarono la tragica notizia del naufragio della goletta Ariel. Solo due uomini riuscirono a scampare al disastro. L’idea del racconto sarebbe poi maturata sulla scia del fervore seguito alle spedizioni di James Cook in Antartide tra il 1772 ed il 1775. Il mito del polo Sud era incrementato anche dai racconti di Jeremiah Reynolds, un navigatore le cui storie, mai provate, Poe volle ascoltare.

È difficile comprendere pienamente cosa Charles Dickens abbia rappresentato per i suoi contemporanei. Forse solo un autentico old Dickensian poteva sapere con quale trepidazione gli inglesi aspettassero i fascicoli azzurri con le (More) nuove puntate del Circolo Pickwick. Basti pensare che la prima uscita fu stampata in quattrocento esemplari, la quindicesima in quarantamila. Quando Dickens lo lesse in pubblico, l’Inghilterra andò in delirio e le sale furono prese d’assalto. “L’effetto di un fenomeno letterario di tali proporzioni, sia dal punto di vista della diffusione che del coinvolgimento emotivo esercitato sul pubblico” scrive Zweig “può realizzarsi solo in concomitanza della presenza di due elementi perlopiù divergenti: la presenza di uno spirito geniale che riesca a inserirsi nella tradizione di un’epoca”. Pur annoverandolo, insieme a Balzac e Dostoevskij, tra i tre maggiori narratori ottocenteschi, lo scrittore austriaco non gli risparmia qualche bordata: “Soddisfatto nei confini della propria cultura nazionale, mai ha sentito l’esigenza di trasgredire la misura artistica, morale o estetica dell’Inghilterra. Non si pose come un rivoluzionario. […] Tentò sempre di raggiungere la tragedia, ma non superò mai i confini del melodramma”. Eppure, alla fine, all’“inesauribile poeta” che fu Dickens, Zweig perdona anche questo, perché “solo quando si detesta la stupida ipocrisia della cultura vittoriana si può valutare giustamente il genio di un artista che ha trasformato la più insignificante delle vite in poesia”.

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford.
The book was intended initially to be a serious travel (More) guide, with accounts of local history of places along the route, but the humorous elements eventually took over, to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages now seem like an unnecessary distraction to the essentially comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers. The jokes seem fresh and witty even today.
The three men were based on Jerome himself and two real-life friends, George, and Harris. The dog, Montmorency, however, was entirely fictional, but, as Jerome had remarked, “had much of me in it.”

Barr McCutcheon, George – Brewster’s Millions –

George Barr McCutcheon (1866-1928), an American novelist and playwright, was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He attended Purdue University but was dismissed when he failed his exams in second year. He then began working as a (More) reporter for the Lafayette Journal and became City Editor of the Lafayette Daily Courier in 1893. He is famous largely because of his Graustark series of novels. In total, McCutcheon wrote forty novels and also wrote plays, Brood House (1910), and Mary Midthorne (1911).
The story revolves around Montgomery Brewster, a poor man who inherits a large sum of money. However, there is a catch — he has to spend every penny within 30 days, and end up with nothing at that time. Should he make the deadline, he stands to gain an even larger sum; should he fail, he remains penniless. Brewster finds that spending so much money is more difficult than he first thinks, especially when the lawyers are trying to make him fail so that they can claim the money. What makes it worse is that he starts to be a little too successful with some ventures, actually making money from them. Can Brewster empty his pockets in time for the deadline, or will he end the book as he started it, with nothing?

A constant theme throughout the book is Huck’s internal struggle between what he has been taught, that helping a runaway slave is a sin, and what he truly believes, that Jim is a good man and it couldn’t possibly be wrong to help him.

Il fatto che Katherine sia morta relativamente giovane ha aggiunto prestigio alla sua eredità.

Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp Murry (14 October 1888 – 9 January 1923) was a prominent modernist writer of short fiction who was born and brought up in colonial New Zealand and wrote under the pen name of Katherine Mansfield. When (More) she was 19, Mansfield left New Zealand and settled in the United Kingdom, where she became a friend of modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. In 1917 she was diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which led to her death at the age of 34.
The first collected volume of short stories of the New Zealand modernist. Inspired by her own travels, Mansfield begins to refine her craft with a series of tales which depict German life at the brink of the first world war.
